Your Vizio remote is your primary gateway to everything your Smart TV can do, and keeping it paired and working correctly is essential for a smooth experience. Depending on when your TV was purchased, you may have a SmartCast Bluetooth remote, a standard infrared (IR) remote, or a voice-enabled Alexa remote — and each works a little differently. This guide explains the differences between Vizio remote types, walks you through pairing and re-pairing procedures for each, and shows you how to use the free SmartCast mobile app as a full-featured backup remote if your physical remote is ever misplaced or stops working.
Standard IR remotes do not require any pairing — they communicate with the TV using infrared signals and work immediately as long as they have batteries and a clear line of sight to the TV. Only SmartCast Bluetooth remotes require pairing.

Vizio Remote Types

Vizio produces several remote models designed to work with different SmartCast TV generations. Understanding which type you have helps you follow the correct pairing procedure.

SmartCast Bluetooth Remote

Models: VR10, VR15, VR17 and newerThe most common remote included with modern Vizio SmartCast TVs. Uses Bluetooth for primary communication, which means it does not need to be aimed at the TV — it works from any angle and through objects. Requires initial pairing and may need occasional re-pairing. Includes a V button (Vizio button) used to initiate pairing.

Standard IR Remote

Older Vizio TV modelsUses infrared (IR) signals to communicate with the TV, identical to how traditional TV remotes work. No pairing required — insert batteries and it works immediately. Must be pointed directly at the TV’s IR sensor for commands to register. If you lose line of sight (for example, placing the remote behind your back), commands will not be received.

Alexa Voice Remote

Compatible SmartCast TVsBluetooth remote with a built-in microphone for Alexa voice control. Requires the same Bluetooth pairing process as the SmartCast remote. After pairing the remote hardware, link it to your Amazon account in Menu → System → Amazon Alexa to activate voice features. Includes a dedicated microphone button for hands-free control.

Pair a SmartCast Bluetooth Remote

New SmartCast remotes usually pair automatically when you first set up your TV. If you have replaced your remote, received a new one, or need to pair it after a factory reset, follow these steps.
1

Install Fresh Batteries

Open the battery compartment on the back of the remote and insert two fresh AA batteries, making sure the positive and negative terminals align with the markings inside the compartment.
2

Point the Remote at the TV

Position yourself within 10 feet of the TV and make sure there is a clear line of sight between the remote and the TV screen for the initial pairing process.
3

Hold the V Button for 3 Seconds

Press and hold the V button (the Vizio logo button at the top of the remote) for approximately 3 seconds. The remote’s LED indicator will begin flashing, indicating that it is in pairing mode and actively broadcasting a Bluetooth pairing signal.
4

Wait for the TV to Detect the Remote

Your Vizio TV will automatically detect the remote’s pairing signal and display a confirmation message on screen. This typically takes 5 to 10 seconds.
5

Confirm Pairing on Screen

When the TV displays the pairing confirmation prompt, press OK on the remote (or follow any specific on-screen instruction) to complete the pairing. The LED on the remote will stop flashing and remain steady briefly before turning off, confirming a successful connection.
You can also trigger remote pairing through the TV’s menu if you have an alternative way to navigate (such as the SmartCast app or buttons on the TV itself): go to Menu → System → Remotes & Accessories → Pair Remote and follow the on-screen instructions.

Pair an IR Remote

If your Vizio TV came with a standard infrared remote, the good news is that no pairing process is needed at all. IR remotes communicate using light pulses rather than Bluetooth radio signals, which means they work the moment you insert batteries. To use your IR remote:
  1. Insert two AA batteries into the battery compartment on the back of the remote.
  2. Point the remote directly at your Vizio TV — specifically at the IR receiver window, which is typically located at the bottom center or bottom right of the TV’s front bezel.
  3. Press any button to confirm the remote is working.
Important IR remote limitations to keep in mind:
  • The remote must have an unobstructed line of sight to the TV’s IR sensor. Furniture, decorations, or even your hand in front of the sensor will block commands.
  • IR range is typically 20 to 30 feet under ideal conditions. Bright sunlight or fluorescent lighting can occasionally interfere with the IR signal.
  • Unlike Bluetooth remotes, IR remotes work even if the TV has been factory reset, because no pairing data needs to be re-established.

Re-Pair a Remote That Stopped Working

If your SmartCast Bluetooth remote was previously working but has stopped responding, a quick re-pairing procedure usually resolves the issue.
1

Remove the Batteries from the Remote

Open the battery compartment and remove both AA batteries. Set them aside — you will reinsert them in a moment.
2

Wait 30 Seconds

Leave the batteries out for at least 30 seconds. This clears the remote’s internal memory and resets its Bluetooth connection state.
3

Reinsert the Batteries

Place the batteries back in the compartment, ensuring correct polarity (positive end toward the spring side).
4

Hold the V Button to Re-Pair

Press and hold the V button for 3 seconds until the LED begins flashing. Follow the same steps described in the Pair a SmartCast Bluetooth Remote section above to complete the re-pairing process.
If the remote still does not work after re-pairing, try replacing the batteries with a fresh set — even batteries that appear charged can sometimes have insufficient voltage for reliable Bluetooth transmission. Also confirm that no other Vizio remote is actively being used nearby, as two remotes attempting to pair simultaneously can sometimes cause issues.

Use the SmartCast App as a Remote

The free Vizio SmartCast app for iOS and Android turns your smartphone into a fully functional remote control. It is the perfect backup solution when your physical remote is lost, broken, or waiting for new batteries.
Download the SmartCast app and set it up on your phone before you ever need it. That way, if your physical remote goes missing, you can immediately use your phone as a replacement without any setup delays.
1

Download the SmartCast App

Download the Vizio SmartCast app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) on your smartphone or tablet. The app is free.
2

Connect Your Phone to the Same WiFi Network

Make sure your smartphone is connected to the same WiFi network as your Vizio TV. The SmartCast app uses local network discovery to find your TV — it will not work if your phone is on a different network or connected via mobile data.
3

Open the App and Sign In

Launch the SmartCast app and sign in with your Vizio account (or create a free account if you do not have one). If your TV was set up at vizio.com/setup, use the same account credentials.
4

Select Your TV from the Device List

On the app’s home screen, tap the Devices icon or select your TV from the automatically populated device list. The app scans your local network and displays all detected SmartCast TVs. Tap your TV’s name to connect.
5

Use the On-Screen Remote

Once connected, tap the Remote icon (usually represented by a remote control icon at the bottom of the app). The on-screen remote interface includes all the standard buttons — directional pad, OK, Volume, Channel, Input, Menu, Back, and Home — as well as quick-launch buttons for popular streaming apps.
The SmartCast app also lets you cast content directly from your phone to the TV, browse the SmartCast app library, and control multiple Vizio TVs in your home from a single app.

Program a Universal Remote

If you prefer to use a single universal remote to control your Vizio TV alongside other devices like cable boxes, Blu-ray players, or sound systems, you will need to program your universal remote with the correct Vizio device code.
Vizio TV codes vary by universal remote brand and model. Common codes for popular universal remotes include:
  • Xfinity / Comcast: 11758, 11756, 10864, 11265
  • Spectrum / Charter: 1758, 1756, 0864
  • DirecTV: 10178, 10748, 11178
  • Dish Network: 505, 627, 720
  • GE Universal Remotes: 1756, 1758, 4093
  • RCA Universal Remotes: 1756, 11756, 12049
If these codes do not work for your specific remote model, consult your universal remote’s manual or search the remote brand’s support website for the latest Vizio TV codes. You can also try the auto-code search feature available on most universal remotes: while holding the Setup button, power on the TV using the auto-search sequence until the TV turns off, then save the code.

Remote Troubleshooting

Start with the simplest fix: replace the batteries with a fresh set of AA batteries. Even batteries that are partially charged may not deliver sufficient power for reliable operation. If the remote still does not respond after a battery replacement, attempt a full re-pair following the steps in the Re-Pair a Remote That Stopped Working section. Confirm no physical obstructions exist between you and the TV. If the buttons feel stuck or the remote has been exposed to liquids, it may need to be replaced.
Partial button failure often indicates a worn or dirty remote. Try pressing unresponsive buttons more firmly — button contacts can become compressed over time. If this does not help, try the re-pairing process, as a partial Bluetooth disconnect can sometimes cause certain button commands to stop transmitting. If specific buttons (like volume or channel) consistently fail, the remote itself may have internal damage and should be replaced.
Weak or intermittent response from a Bluetooth remote usually points to low battery power or Bluetooth interference. Replace the batteries first. If the issue continues, check whether other Bluetooth devices nearby (headphones, speakers, game controllers) are actively connected and potentially causing interference. For IR remotes, clean the IR emitter window on the remote and the IR sensor window on the TV with a soft dry cloth — even a thin layer of dust or grime can significantly reduce range.
Firmware updates occasionally require SmartCast Bluetooth remotes to be re-paired. Hold the V button for 3 seconds to initiate pairing mode and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. This is typically a one-time fix after a major firmware update and does not affect day-to-day operation. If re-pairing fails, use the SmartCast app on your phone to navigate the TV’s menus and attempt the pairing process via Menu → System → Remotes & Accessories → Pair Remote.
