Sometimes the best way to fix a stubborn problem on your Vizio Smart TV — or to prepare it for a new owner — is to wipe it clean and start from scratch. A factory reset restores your TV to the exact state it was in when it left the manufacturer: all your accounts are signed out, all downloaded apps are removed, all customized settings are erased, and the TV is ready to be set up again from the beginning. This guide explains when a factory reset makes sense, what it actually does, how to do it with or without a remote, and exactly what to expect afterward — including re-running activation at vizio.com/setup.
A factory reset cannot be undone. Once you confirm the reset, all saved WiFi passwords, account sign-ins, app data, picture settings, parental controls, and personal preferences are permanently erased. Make sure you actually need a full reset before proceeding — try the soft reset first.

What a Factory Reset Does

Understanding what gets erased helps you prepare before pulling the trigger. When you factory reset your Vizio Smart TV, the following happens:
  • All settings return to factory defaults — Picture mode, audio settings, sleep timers, parental controls, and accessibility settings are all wiped.
  • All accounts are signed out — Your Vizio account, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and every other signed-in account is logged out. You’ll need to sign back in to each service after setup.
  • All apps are removed — Any apps you added beyond the pre-installed set are deleted. You’ll need to reinstall them after the reset.
  • WiFi credentials are erased — Your saved network name and password are removed. You’ll need to reconnect to your WiFi network.
  • SmartCast activation is cleared — Your TV will need to be re-activated through vizio.com/setup after the reset, just like a brand-new TV.
  • Viewing history and recommendations are cleared — Any content preferences stored locally on the TV are reset.
The TV’s hardware is completely unaffected — a factory reset is a software-level operation and does not change your TV’s firmware version or repair any physical damage.

Before You Reset — Try These First

A factory reset is a last resort, not a first step. Many common issues that seem to require a reset can actually be solved with a targeted fix:
  • Frozen or unresponsive TV: Try a soft power cycle (unplug for 60 seconds) before resetting.
  • Single app not working: Clear the app’s cache data or reinstall just that app rather than wiping the whole TV.
  • WiFi keeps dropping: Restart your router and re-enter your WiFi credentials — no reset needed.
  • Remote stopped working: Replace batteries or re-pair the remote rather than resetting the TV.

Before you reset, write down your WiFi network name and password somewhere you won’t lose it. Your TV will ask for it again during the post-reset setup, and it’s easy to get stuck if you can’t remember a complex password at that moment.

Soft Reset (Power Cycle)

A soft reset is not the same as a factory reset — it does not erase any of your data. It simply clears the TV’s working memory and restarts all running processes. Think of it like rebooting a computer. This step resolves the majority of day-to-day issues and should always come before a full factory reset.

Unplug the power cord from the wall

Do not use the remote to put the TV in standby mode — pull the physical power cord from the wall outlet (or from the back of the TV). Standby mode keeps the TV’s memory active; only a full power cut clears it.

Wait a full 60 seconds

Don’t rush this step. It takes about 60 seconds for all residual charge to drain from the TV’s capacitors and for the memory to fully clear. Set a timer if needed.

Plug back in and power on

Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and press the power button. Allow the TV up to 90 seconds to fully boot, especially if it needs to reconnect to WiFi and reload the SmartCast interface.

Test the problem

Try whatever was causing the issue before the soft reset. In most cases — frozen picture, unresponsive apps, audio glitch, WiFi drop — the problem is gone after a clean reboot.

Factory Reset via Menu

If the soft reset didn’t solve your problem and you want to do a full factory reset using your remote and the TV menu, follow these steps:

Press the Menu button on your remote

From any screen on your Vizio TV, press the Menu button on your remote control. This opens the main settings menu on the left side of the screen.

Navigate to System

Use the arrow keys to scroll down and select System, then press OK.

Select Reset & Admin

Within the System submenu, scroll down to Reset & Admin and press OK.

Choose Reset TV to Factory Defaults

Select Reset TV to Factory Defaults and press OK. This is the option that performs a complete wipe — not the Soft Power Cycle option listed above it.

Enter the parental control PIN if prompted

If you have parental controls set up, the TV will ask for your parental control PIN before proceeding. The default PIN is 0000 (four zeros). If you’ve changed it and forgotten it, see the section below on resetting the parental controls PIN.

Confirm the reset

The TV will show a final confirmation screen warning you that all data will be erased. Select Reset or Yes to confirm. Do not unplug the TV or press any buttons during this process.

Wait for the TV to restart

The factory reset process takes approximately 1–3 minutes. The screen will go dark, then the Vizio logo will appear, and the TV will reboot directly into the first-time setup wizard — the same screen you saw when the TV was brand new.

Factory Reset Without a Remote

If your remote is lost, broken, or out of batteries and you need to factory reset your Vizio TV, you can do it using only the physical buttons on the TV itself.

Locate the physical power button on the TV

Look for a small button or joystick on the side edge (usually the right side), the bottom edge, or the back of your Vizio TV. The exact placement varies by model. On many SmartCast models, it’s a single multi-function button on the lower right side of the back panel.

Hold the power button for 10 or more seconds

With the TV powered on, press and hold the physical power button continuously for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding even after the screen flickers or the TV appears to turn off.

Watch for the on-screen prompt

After 10+ seconds, the TV will display a message asking you to confirm the factory reset. On models with a joystick button, use it to navigate to the confirm option. On models with a single button, follow the on-screen instructions — you may need to press the button a specific number of times.

Wait for the reset to complete

The TV will reboot into the setup wizard. From here, use the SmartCast mobile app (iOS or Android) or a USB keyboard connected to the TV’s USB port to navigate the setup if you still don’t have a working remote.

After the Factory Reset

Once the reset completes, your TV is in exactly the same state as when it was manufactured. Here’s what you’ll need to do to get it running again: 1. Connect to WiFi. The setup wizard will guide you through selecting your home WiFi network and entering the password. Have your WiFi password ready — this is the most common point where people get stuck post-reset. 2. Complete activation at vizio.com/setup. After connecting to WiFi, your TV will display a 6-digit PIN and prompt you to visit vizio.com/setup on a separate device (your phone, tablet, or computer). Sign in with your existing Vizio account or create a new one, then enter the PIN at vizio.com/setup to complete activation.
Even if your TV was already activated before the factory reset, you must go through vizio.com/setup activation again. The reset clears the activation status along with everything else. Keep a phone or computer nearby when you start the post-reset setup.
3. Reinstall your apps. After activation, go to the SmartCast app store to reinstall streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. Sign in to each service with your credentials. 4. Reconfigure your picture and audio settings. Your picture mode, backlight level, audio output settings, and any accessibility features are all reset to factory defaults. Spend a few minutes going through Menu → Picture and Menu → Audio to set them to your preferences. 5. Re-pair your remote (if applicable). If you use a Bluetooth SmartCast remote, you may need to re-pair it to the TV. Press and hold the Mute + Volume Down buttons simultaneously for five seconds to initiate pairing.

Resetting a Forgotten Parental Controls PIN

If you’ve set a custom parental controls PIN and forgotten it, you won’t be able to access the factory reset option through the menu without it. Here’s how to work around it:
  • Try the default PIN first: The factory default is 0000 (four zeros). If you never explicitly changed it, this will work.
  • Try 1234: Some users inadvertently set this during initial setup.
  • Contact Vizio Support: Vizio’s support team can assist with PIN resets if you provide proof of ownership (model number, serial number, and purchase information). Call 1-844-254-8087 or chat at support.vizio.com.
  • Use the physical button method: The factory reset via physical power button (described above) bypasses the parental PIN entirely, since it uses hardware-level access rather than the menu system.

Preparing Your TV for Sale or Donation

If you’re factory resetting your Vizio TV because you’re selling it or giving it away, take these additional steps to fully protect your personal data:
  1. Complete the factory reset as described above.
  2. Verify the setup wizard appears — this confirms the reset was successful and the TV is showing as unactivated.
  3. Do not complete the post-reset setup — leave the TV at the setup wizard screen so the new owner can set it up with their own Vizio account and go through vizio.com/setup activation with their credentials.
  4. Remove any linked streaming service accounts before resetting if possible — though the factory reset signs you out of everything automatically, confirming it manually gives you peace of mind.
