# Vizio TV Initial Configuration – First Boot Setup Steps

> Walk through your Vizio TV's initial configuration wizard. Set language, picture mode, network, and complete activation at vizio.com/setup.

The first time you power on a Vizio Smart TV, an on-screen configuration wizard launches automatically. This wizard walks you through every essential setting — language, picture mode, network connection, time zone, and activation — before handing you off to the full SmartCast home screen. Understanding what each step involves means you'll move through the wizard quickly and confidently, without accidentally choosing settings you'll want to change later.

This guide covers every screen you'll encounter during initial configuration and explains the best choices to make at each step. By the end, your TV will be fully configured and activated via **vizio.com/setup**, ready for streaming.

## Before You Begin

A little preparation goes a long way. Running through this checklist before you power on your TV prevents interruptions mid-wizard.

<Note>
  **Pre-Setup Checklist:**

  * Your TV is unboxed, the stand is attached, and the power cable is connected
  * Remote batteries are installed and the remote is paired (or ready to pair)
  * You know your WiFi network name (SSID) and password
  * You have access to a phone, tablet, or computer to visit vizio.com/setup
  * Your Vizio account email and password are ready — or you're prepared to create a new account
  * The TV is connected to power and positioned for viewing
</Note>

## Initial Configuration Steps

Work through each screen of the wizard in the order it appears. Use the arrow keys and **OK** button on your remote to navigate menus and confirm selections.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Power On and Welcome Screen">
    Press the power button on your remote or on the TV itself. The Vizio logo animates across the screen, followed by a welcome screen with a prompt to **Start Setup** or **Set Up Later**. Select **Start Setup** to launch the full wizard. Choosing **Set Up Later** skips activation and limits your TV to basic functionality until you return to complete setup through **Menu → System → Reset & Admin → SmartCast Setup**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select Your Language">
    Use the arrow keys to highlight your preferred language from the list. English, Spanish, and French are available on most Vizio models sold in North America. Press **OK** to confirm your selection. The entire wizard interface switches to your chosen language immediately.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read and Accept the Terms of Service">
    Vizio displays its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Scroll through them using the down arrow key or press **Skip to Bottom** if that option appears. You must select **I Agree** to proceed — the wizard cannot advance without acceptance of these terms. If you have questions about the privacy policy, visit vizio.com for the full legal documentation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose Your Picture Mode">
    The wizard presents a picture mode selection screen with a live preview. You'll see options including **Vivid**, **Standard**, **Calibrated**, **Calibrated Dark**, and **Game** (on some models). Select the mode that looks best to you in your viewing environment, keeping in mind you can change this at any time under **Menu → Picture → Picture Mode**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect to Your Network">
    Select **Wireless** to scan for nearby WiFi networks. Choose your network name from the list and enter your password using the on-screen keyboard. Press **Connect** when done. If you prefer a wired connection, select **Wired** — the TV detects a connected Ethernet cable automatically and skips the password step entirely. Wait for the connection confirmation before moving to the next step.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set Your Time Zone">
    Once connected to the internet, the TV may auto-detect your time zone based on your network's location. Confirm the detected time zone or use the arrow keys to select the correct one manually. Accurate time zone settings ensure your program guide, WatchFree+ schedule, and scheduled recordings display the correct times.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check for Firmware Updates">
    With an active internet connection, the wizard checks for available firmware updates. If an update is found, the TV downloads and installs it automatically. Do not power off or unplug the TV during this process — an interrupted firmware update can cause system instability. The update process typically takes 3 to 8 minutes depending on file size and connection speed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Activation PIN Display">
    After firmware updates complete, the wizard displays your unique **6-digit activation PIN** prominently on screen. This is the code you'll use at vizio.com/setup to link your TV to your Vizio account. Leave this screen visible and move to the next step to complete activation.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Picture Mode Selection

Choosing the right picture mode during initial configuration has a significant impact on your everyday viewing experience. Here's what each option means:

### Vivid

Vivid mode cranks up brightness, contrast, and color saturation to make the screen pop — especially in brightly lit showrooms. While eye-catching in the store, Vivid mode often looks oversaturated and harsh in a typical home environment, particularly in dimmer rooms.

### Standard

Standard mode offers a balance between brightness and color accuracy. It's a safe choice for rooms with moderate ambient lighting and works well as a neutral starting point you can fine-tune manually.

### Calibrated

Calibrated mode is designed to match industry-standard color accuracy (close to the Rec. 709 color space used in broadcast and streaming content). It renders colors and contrast closer to what directors and cinematographers intended. Most home theater enthusiasts and professional reviewers recommend Calibrated mode as the best everyday setting.

### Calibrated Dark

Calibrated Dark is similar to Calibrated but reduces backlight intensity further, making it ideal for darker rooms or evening viewing. It minimizes glare and reduces eye strain when ambient light is low.

### Game Mode

Game mode reduces input lag to its minimum, which is critical for responsive gaming. It sacrifices some color processing in exchange for lower latency. Switch to Game mode whenever you connect a gaming console for the best experience.

<Tip>
  Select **Calibrated** mode during initial configuration for the most accurate, lifelike picture right out of the box. You can always fine-tune brightness, contrast, and color temperature afterward under **Menu → Picture → Advanced Picture**, or switch to **Calibrated Dark** if you watch TV primarily in a dim room.

## Completing Activation at vizio.com/setup

Once the wizard displays your 6-digit PIN, you're ready to complete activation.

1. On your phone, tablet, or computer, open a browser and navigate to **vizio.com/setup**.
2. Sign in with your Vizio account email and password. If you don't have an account, select **Create Account** and complete the short registration form — it's free.
3. On the activation page, enter the 6-digit PIN shown on your TV screen.
4. Click **Continue** or **Activate**. Within a few seconds, your TV screen updates to confirm that activation was successful.
5. Return to your TV — the wizard advances automatically to the SmartCast home screen.

<Warning>
  The 6-digit PIN expires after a short window (typically 5–10 minutes). If the PIN disappears or the TV shows a message that the code has expired, press **Back** on your remote and re-enter the activation flow to generate a new PIN. Then return to vizio.com/setup and enter the new code.
</Warning>

## What Happens After Configuration

When the initial configuration wizard completes, your Vizio Smart TV boots into the **SmartCast home screen** — your central hub for all entertainment. Here's what's immediately available:

* **App Row:** Pre-installed apps including Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ are ready to launch. Sign in to each service with your streaming account credentials.
* **WatchFree+:** Vizio's free built-in streaming service is live and available immediately without a subscription. Access it from the SmartCast home screen.
* **Input Menu:** Switch between HDMI inputs, antenna, and SmartCast using the **Input** button on your remote.
* **Settings:** Explore **Menu → All Settings** to configure parental controls, adjust audio settings, connect Bluetooth devices, and manage display preferences.
* **Firmware:** Future firmware updates arrive over the air automatically. You can also check manually under **Menu → System → Check for Updates** at any time.

<Warning>
  Do not skip firmware updates during initial configuration or afterward. Firmware updates patch security vulnerabilities, improve app compatibility, and fix bugs that could affect streaming performance and TV stability. Keeping your Vizio TV updated ensures the best possible experience long-term.
</Warning>

Your Vizio Smart TV is now fully configured and ready for everyday use. For detailed app setup instructions, visit the SmartCast guide, or return to [vizio.com/setup](https://vizio.com/setup) at any time to manage your device registration and account settings.

## Frequently Asked Questions

<Accordion title="What if the setup wizard doesn't launch automatically?">
  If the setup wizard doesn't appear when you first power on the TV, the TV may have been previously activated or the wizard was dismissed accidentally. To restart it, press **Menu** on your remote, navigate to **System → Reset & Admin → Reset TV to Factory Defaults**, and confirm the reset. The wizard re-launches on the next boot as if the TV were brand new. Any previously saved settings are cleared, but since this is your first setup, there's nothing to lose.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Can I skip the picture mode selection and change it later?">
  Yes. If you're not sure which picture mode is right for you, select **Standard** during the wizard and move on. You can revisit and change the picture mode at any time by pressing **Menu** on your remote and navigating to **Picture → Picture Mode**. The change takes effect immediately, so you can preview each mode in real time with whatever content is on screen.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="What if my TV doesn't find my WiFi network during setup?">
  If your network doesn't appear in the list, first select **Rescan** to refresh available networks. If it still doesn't appear, confirm that your router is broadcasting on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band and that you're within range. You can also select **Enter a Network Name Manually** to type your SSID directly if your network is hidden. If the problem persists, consult the [WiFi Connection Guide](/setup/wifi-connection) for detailed troubleshooting steps.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="How do I skip activation and complete it later?">
  On the activation PIN screen, look for a **Skip** or **Set Up Later** option. Selecting this returns you to the SmartCast home screen, though many features remain locked until activation is completed. To finish activation at any time, go to **Menu → System → Reset & Admin → SmartCast Setup** to regenerate a new PIN, then visit **vizio.com/setup** on your phone or computer to complete the process.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="The firmware update during setup is taking a long time — is that normal?">
  Yes, firmware update duration varies based on the size of the update and your internet connection speed. Most updates complete in 3 to 10 minutes, but larger system updates can occasionally take up to 20 minutes. The TV displays a progress bar during the update. Do not unplug the TV or interrupt the update — doing so can corrupt the firmware and require a service repair. Once the update finishes, the setup wizard continues automatically.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="What should I do if activation at vizio.com/setup fails?">
  If the activation portal rejects your PIN, the most common cause is an expired code. Your TV generates a new PIN every few minutes automatically — simply wait for the new code to appear on screen and enter it promptly at **vizio.com/setup**. If the issue continues, confirm your internet connection is active, try a different browser, or clear your browser's cache and cookies. You can also visit **vizio.com/setup** from a different device, such as switching from your phone to a laptop.
