# Vizio TV Firmware Update Guide – Keep Your TV Current

> Update your Vizio Smart TV's firmware to get the latest features, security patches, and bug fixes. Manual and automatic update options explained.

Keeping your Vizio Smart TV's firmware up to date is one of the most important things you can do to ensure a great long-term ownership experience. Firmware updates deliver new features, improve compatibility with streaming services and connected devices, fix bugs that may affect performance or stability, and apply security patches that protect your TV and your home network. Vizio regularly releases firmware updates for SmartCast TVs, and the update process is straightforward whether your TV is connected to the internet or not. This guide covers manual updates, automatic updates, USB-based updates for offline TVs, and what to expect before, during, and after the update process.

  **Never power off your Vizio TV during a firmware update.** Interrupting the update process can corrupt the TV's firmware, potentially causing it to become unresponsive. If a power outage is likely, wait until conditions are stable before initiating an update.

## Check for Updates Manually

If you want to check for and install the latest firmware immediately, you can trigger a manual update check at any time from the System settings menu. Your TV must be connected to the internet via WiFi or ethernet for this method.

    Press the **Menu** button on your Vizio remote. The Settings panel will appear along the right side of the screen.

    The TV will download the update, apply it, and automatically restart. This process typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the size of the update and your internet connection speed. The screen may go black and the TV's power light may flash during this time — this is normal.

    After the restart, your TV will return to the home screen. You can verify the update was successful by checking the current firmware version under **Menu → System → System Information**.

  If you have recently completed your initial TV activation at **vizio.com/setup**, it is recommended that you check for firmware updates immediately after setup. The TV that shipped from the factory may have older firmware, and updating right away ensures you have access to all the latest features and fixes from the start.

## Enable Automatic Updates

Rather than manually checking for updates, you can configure your Vizio TV to download and install firmware updates automatically whenever one becomes available. This is the most convenient option for most users.

## What Happens During an Update

Understanding what the TV does during a firmware update helps you know what to expect and what not to worry about.

    The TV downloads the firmware package from Vizio's servers over your internet connection. Download size varies but is typically between 200 MB and 1 GB. You will see a progress indicator on screen. The TV remains usable during this phase on some models.

    On the first boot after an update, the TV may take 30–60 seconds longer than usual to reach the home screen as it completes any background configuration tasks associated with the new firmware version.

The entire process from starting the download to returning to the home screen typically takes **5 to 15 minutes** for most updates. Larger major firmware releases may take up to 30 minutes on slower internet connections.

## How to Check Your Current Firmware Version

Before or after updating, you can check which firmware version your TV is currently running. This information is also useful when contacting Vizio support.

## Update via USB Drive

If your Vizio TV is not connected to the internet, you can still update the firmware manually using a USB flash drive. This method requires a computer with internet access to download the firmware file from Vizio's website.

    Your TV's model number is printed on a label on the back of the set. It is also visible under **Menu → System → System Information** if you can access the menu.

  <Step title="Download the Firmware from Vizio's Website">
    On a computer, go to **vizio.com/setup** and navigate to the Support section. Search for your TV model and locate the Firmware Downloads page. Download the latest firmware file for your model — it will be in a `.zip` format.

  <Step title="Prepare the USB Drive">
    Use a USB flash drive formatted as **FAT32** with at least 2 GB of free space. Extract the downloaded `.zip` file and copy the firmware file (typically a `.pkg` file) to the **root directory** (top level) of the USB drive — do not place it inside any folders.

  <Step title="Insert the USB Drive into Your TV">
    Insert the prepared USB drive into one of the USB ports on your Vizio TV. The TV should detect the firmware file automatically.

  <Step title="Follow the On-Screen Prompts">
    Your TV will display a prompt asking if you want to install the detected firmware update. Select **Yes** or **Install** and press **OK**. The installation process is identical to an online update — the TV will install the firmware and restart automatically.

  <Step title="Remove the USB Drive After Reboot">
    Once the TV has restarted and returned to the home screen, you can safely remove the USB drive.

  Only download firmware files from the official **vizio.com/setup** support portal or the official Vizio website. Never use firmware files obtained from third-party websites, as they may be modified, incomplete, or incompatible with your specific TV model.

## After the Update

Once your TV restarts after a firmware update, you can expect the following:

**Settings are preserved.** In the vast majority of cases, all your display settings, audio preferences, WiFi configuration, and app logins are retained after a firmware update. You should not need to reconfigure your TV from scratch.

**SmartCast and apps may update.** After a firmware update, SmartCast and individual streaming apps may perform their own updates in the background. The TV home screen may load slightly slower than usual for the first few minutes as this background activity completes.

**Re-pairing your remote may occasionally be needed.** In rare cases — particularly after major firmware releases — Bluetooth-paired SmartCast remotes may need to be re-paired. If your remote stops responding after an update, hold the **V button** on the remote for 3 seconds to initiate re-pairing. **New features may appear in the menu.** Firmware updates sometimes add new settings, options, or menu items. It is worth browsing the Settings menu after a major update to discover anything new.

## Firmware Update Troubleshooting

  If the update download fails, first check your internet connection — run a quick test by loading an app like Netflix. If the connection seems slow or unstable, try moving your TV closer to your WiFi router or connecting via ethernet. Power cycle your router and try the update again. If the download consistently fails, try the USB update method described above as an alternative.

  If the TV appears frozen during the installation phase — the screen is black or shows a static progress bar for more than 30 minutes — wait at least 45 minutes before taking any action, as some larger updates take longer than expected. If the TV still shows no progress after 45 minutes, carefully unplug the power cord, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in. In most cases the TV will recover and either continue or complete the update on restart. If the TV fails to boot after this, contact Vizio support.

  If the Check for Updates screen reports that your TV is up to date but you believe a newer firmware version exists, verify your internet connection is working and try the check again after a few hours. Vizio often staggers firmware rollouts, pushing updates to a percentage of devices at a time rather than all at once. Your TV will receive the update during the next rollout window. You can also try the USB update method to install the latest version immediately.

  Repeated reboots (a reboot loop) after a firmware update are uncommon but can occur. First, unplug the TV from power for 60 seconds and plug it back in. If the loop continues, try performing a factory reset by pressing and holding the **Input** and **Volume Down** buttons on the TV (not the remote) simultaneously for 10 seconds. This resets the TV to factory state, after which you can set it up again and re-apply the update. If this does not resolve the issue, contact Vizio customer support.
